Support Group for Mechanical & Artificial Heart Valve Surgery & Using Warfarin
Hi I had a VF arrest while at the gym on the 17th Jan, luckily there was an off duty paramedic onsite who had the skill to resus me with the in house defib - all due to severe aortic stenosis, I had an op to widen the valve 24 years ago and without symptoms it came back to haunt me. On the 24th of Jan I had my aortic valve replaced and the root rebuilt.
On Sunday the 15th of Apr I ran 5km on the same treadmill - at a slightly more pedestrain pace.

I went into hospital on Monday for my pre op and meeting the surgeon. The morning was blood tests, height, weight, peak flow, chest xray and ecg. Then met with the cardiac nurse to discuss things. The cardiac nurse was mostly concerned about ensuring that all the things that need to be in place for after surgery and my discharge home. Just had a phone call to say my op date is set for the 23rd April. Must admit I'm shitting myself.
Hopefully all will go well and I'll be able to let you know about it afterwards.
Thanks for all the help and advice I have received from everyone. Best wishes,

Not really a question, since I suppose all recovery times differ, but was out and about today and met some pupils from school, they were asking "Miss, are you coming to our leavers ball?" I'd like to think that 6 weeks post op I could have a night out? It wouldn't be a wild one - I think my days of 'avin it large' - are probably over! Hope all is going well for folks out there. Looking forward to more updates from those that are in the initial stages of recovery. I get…Continue
Well I have my date now – next Thurs 12th April, getting nervous now but equally just want the Op over with so I can get on the road to recovery. I went to a Pre-Op morning session at Papworth last Thursday – it was very helpful & informative, blood tests, Chest X-ray and an opportunity to talk to nursing staff etc about the Operation & what to expect over the next few months. With regards to work, my surgeon suggests I might be off for 12weeks but I’m hoping for say 6…
