Support Group for Mechanical & Artificial Heart Valve Surgery & Using Warfarin
I have spent the last 7 weeks in Cardiac Rehab twice a week. I found it really beneficial and you can work gently at your own pace. Our local council offer a discount for their fitness programmes under the exercise prescription scheme. The Physio at Cardiac Rehab completes the paperwork and I'll get an appointment after Christmas for a session with one of the trainers for my own circuit. Lots of heart friendly classes to join as well.
I saw my Cardiologist yesterday and had a…Continue
I'm glad to be at this stage. The pain and discomfort is subsiding and I'm now walking 30 mins a day. I go for pre assessment for rehab next week. I'm concerned that my heart rate is over 100. Before the op it was around 60. I hope it will settle in time. I'm at the Warfarin clinic twice a week as my INR is not yet in therapeutic range. Still getting used to the thump click of the St Jude mechanical heart valve replacement for my mitral valve. Very disconcerting when you hear it…Continue
Saw the cardiac surgeon earlier this week at Leeds. I now have my op date - August 28th. Sooner than I thought. He will try for repair first but if not a mechanical heart valve seems the better choice. Find myself in a bit of a spin and trying to get organised. I think alot of displacement activity is going on! Wondered if anyone had been told that a mitral valve repair would be tried for, but ended up with a mechanical heart valve?
Any practical tips on getting prepared for…Continue
Got my appointment through yesterday to see the Cardiac Surgeon, a specialist in Mitral Valve Surgery at Leeds General Infirmary on August 7th.
Also saw my Cardiologist at Pinderfields, Wakefield to check I was OK after the Angiogram. I will be discharged back to the Cardiologist at Pinderfields after Surgery and he has made me an appointment for 6 months by which time I will have had surgery.
Seems to be gathering momentum quite quickly. Funny these days how life seems to be…Continue
Thanks for the welcome Graeme. I am a 60 year old retired NHS Physiotherapist. My sister (65 years) died earlier this year and the post mortem report showed that she had "markedly abnormal mitral valve leaflets and enlarged heart" which resulted in her death. I recalled a time many years ago when a GP advised me that I had a heart murmur. As I was young and fit I forgot about it. Decided to see my GP after my sister's death. He picked up the heart murmur and referred me urgently to the…Continue
