Feeling my heartbeat

I'm 2 weeks post-op.  From reading posts before my surgery, I was expecting to hear my valve. It was a bit startling at first, but I have gotten used to the noise.  What I'm struggling with now is feeling my heart-beat.  No doctor or nurse seems to understand this and they keep telling me my pulse rate is fine. I'm trying to explain to them it doesn't feel fast, but feels much stronger, I constantly feel it.  Is this normal? Will it start to decrease or is this something I will always have?…

Hi Rebecca,

This happened to me also. I asked my registrar and he said 'something like'in some people the heart is not  repositioned exactly as it was pre-opp. and it was a bit closer to my chest. he said it would go back to normal after a while and it has. It used to thump against my chest, especially during a deep breath. Is this what you mean? If so it will go.

Regards, Brian

Rebecca... I know exactly what you mean and only someone with a MHV can feel what you are feeleing..we all feel actually is stronger - which is a great thing! Docs and other people only hear the ticking but as we (humans and animals) are about 90 per cent water (!) what you 'hear' is the hydrostatic pressure being generated by the MHV in our body..which takes a bit getting used to.. hence the 'thump' part of our motto... Click! Tick! Thump! but it is normal and you will get used to it... quite reassuring actually!
